Zambia Public Holidays Calendar
The fixed and moveable public holidays in Zambia, what closes, and how election days can disrupt travel with localised roadblocks.
Zambia Public Holidays Calendar
Zambia shuts down on a set of fixed dates and a handful of moveable religious and civic days. The practical question for any traveller is which closures actually affect your trip. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close on every public holiday. Large supermarkets and fuel stations in major towns open reduced hours. Informal markets and small shops may stay open. Safari lodges, camps, and adventure operators in the national parks and around Victoria Falls run their normal programme, but moving between them becomes harder because bank and government closures also close the services you rely on for cash and paperwork. This calendar lists every fixed and moveable date, tells you what closes, and explains how the moveable dates affect travel logistics.
Zambia Bank Holidays Dates
Fixed Bank Holidays
The fixed dates that function as bank holidays in Zambia are New Year's Day (1 January), International Women's Day (8 March), Youth Day (12 March), Kenneth Kaunda Day (28 April), Labour Day (1 May), African Freedom Day (25 May), National Prayer Day (18 October), Independence Day (24 October), and Christmas Day (25 December). On these dates all banks, government offices, and most formal businesses close. ATMs in Lusaka and the Victoria Falls area still work but frequently run out of Kwacha. Withdraw cash the day before. Fuel stations on the major highways (T1 to the south, T3 to the Copperbelt) stay open but may cut their hours. Safari lodges and camps run their normal programme. If you need to change money or pay a bill that requires a bank transfer, do it before the closure.
Easter Weekend
The moveable Christian dates are Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Monday, timed around Easter Sunday each year. Three days in a row mean a full four-day weekend. On the Friday and Monday, bank closures are complete. On Holy Saturday, some larger supermarkets in Lusaka open until midday. The risk for travellers is that a long weekend at Easter fills every lodge room in South Luangwa and the Victoria Falls area. Book accommodation four to six months ahead if your trip overlaps Easter.
Islamic Holidays
Two Islamic dates are observed: Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha. Both are confirmed annually by the Chief Justice's office and move according to the lunar calendar. Government offices and banks close. Commerce in Lusaka and the Copperbelt is largely unaffected except at Muslim-owned businesses. Most safari lodges are in areas with no significant Muslim population and operate normally. If you need to pick up a visa or renew a permit, do not plan that for an Eid date.
Zambia Election Day Closures
Election days are declared as public holidays by the authorities, for both general and local elections. Banks, government offices, and most businesses close. The bigger issue for a traveller is localised roadblocks. Political rallies and voting stations create traffic hold-ups and checkpoints that add unpredictable delays. If an election is announced during your travel window, add one full day of buffer between every road transfer. Avoid driving through residential areas in Lusaka, Ndola, or Kitwe on election day itself. Safari parks are unaffected. Getting from a park to an airport may take double the usual time. Check the Zambian Electoral Commission, the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, the US State Department, and the Government of Canada travel advisories before departure for confirmed election dates.
Zambia Easter Holiday Travel
Easter is the busiest domestic travel period in Zambia outside the school breaks. Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Monday form a long weekend. Bus and minibus occupancy rises sharply, particularly on routes from Lusaka to the Victoria Falls area and Lusaka to the Copperbelt. Lodges in South Luangwa National Park, Lower Zambezi National Park, and around the Falls book out weeks ahead. The April school break often overlaps Easter, compounding demand. Book by January if you want a specific camp during Easter. Prices at that peak are the highest of the year. Shift your itinerary by two weeks either side and you pay less and get an emptier park.
On Good Friday itself, government offices and banks are closed. Most petrol stations on the T1 road south stay open. The Lookout Cafe at Victoria Falls and lodge restaurants serve as normal. The failure case that catches people: you arrive in Lusaka on Easter Saturday expecting to pick up a rental car, but the rental desk is closed or has limited hours. Pre-arrange a hotel transfer for that day and pick up the vehicle on Easter Monday afternoon. The taxi from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport into Lusaka centre takes 30 to 45 minutes. Expect to pay US$25 to US$30, set by the airport taxi association. Cars are available on any public holiday because the airport runs independently.
Fixed Public Holidays in Zambia: the Complete List
These dates do not move. Mark them on your calendar.
- New Year's Day: 1 January
- International Women's Day: 8 March
- Youth Day: 12 March
- Kenneth Kaunda Day: 28 April
- Labour Day: 1 May
- African Freedom Day: 25 May
- National Prayer Day: 18 October
- Independence Day: 24 October
- Christmas Day: 25 December
Of these, 24 October is the most significant national celebration. Government offices close, banks close, and traffic around Lusaka slows for parades. Lodges in the parks run normally. Christmas Day in Zambia is hot, with temperatures above 30°C. Most lodges serve a special lunch. The only problem is cash. ATMs in small towns like Chipata or Mfuwe run out of Kwacha on Christmas Eve, and card machines fail due to connectivity issues. Withdraw money in Lusaka or the Victoria Falls area before you travel.
Moveable Public Holidays and Regional Ceremonies That Affect Travel
Christian Moveable Dates
Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Monday shift each year. The dates are confirmed by the Ministry of Education alongside school term dates. Term 1 runs roughly mid-January to mid-April, term 2 roughly mid-May to mid-August, and term 3 roughly early September to early December. Exact dates are published annually by the Ministry of Education. Easter falls inside the first school break window, which is why domestic travel spikes.
Islamic Moveable Dates
Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha follow the lunar calendar. The Chief Justice's office confirms each date. Government and banks close. Travellers arriving at Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport in the Victoria Falls area on an Eid day can still get a taxi into town in 15 minutes. Expect to pay US$10 to US$15, the rate set by the airport taxi association. If you need a visa on arrival, that service operates normally because immigration is considered essential.
Regional Traditional Ceremonies
The Kulamba Ceremony (Eastern Province, near Chipata), the Kuomboka Ceremony (Western Province, timing depends on Zambezi flood levels, March or April), the Umtheto Cultural Festival (Northern Province, Mzimba), the Nc'wala Ceremony (Eastern Province, Mtenguleni village, late February), and the Lwiindi Gonde Ceremony (Southern Province, Monze, July) cause localised closures. Government offices and banks in the immediate district may close. Roads around the ceremony site can be blocked by crowds. These are not nationwide shutdowns. If your itinerary passes through Eastern Province in late February, check the Nc'wala date with the local tourism office before driving.
Zambia Independence Day October
24 October marks Zambia's independence from British colonial rule in 1964. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. In Lusaka, the main event is a parade at the Independence Stadium. Traffic around the stadium and along the Great North Road (T2) is heavy from mid-morning until early afternoon. If you are transiting through Lusaka on 24 October, book a hotel near Kenneth Kaunda International Airport rather than trying to drive across town. The taxi from the airport to a central hotel takes 30 to 45 minutes. Expect to pay US$25 to US$30, the airport taxi association rate, even on the holiday. Safari lodges in South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, and Kafue run their usual game drives. The date falls in the dry season, which is peak tourism season, so lodges are already busy. Flights are unaffected: Proflight Zambia and Mahogany Air operate their regular schedules on 24 October. Confirm by phone the day before because smaller carriers reduce frequencies on public holidays.
| What You Need | On A Normal Day | On A Public Holiday | What To Do Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash in Kwacha | ATM in any town | ATMs may run out, especially in Mfuwe, Chipata, Mongu | Withdraw in Lusaka or the Victoria Falls area the day before |
| Bank transfer or currency exchange | Open at bank branches | All banks closed | Use lodge payment by card (but expect connectivity failures) or bring USD cash |
| Fuel for self-drive | Fuel stations open in towns | Large stations open reduced hours; rural stations may close | Fill your tank the evening before and carry a 20-litre jerry can |
| Rental car pickup | Desk at airport or town office | May close or operate limited hours | Arrange after-hours pickup or collect the car the day before |
| Visa on arrival | Immigration desk at LUN, LVI, NLA | Immigration staffed as essential service | Works normally, but queue may be longer if fewer counters are open |
| Bus or minibus | Regular departures | Reduced frequency, especially on routes from Lusaka to Chipata and Mongu | Book a seat two days in advance; expect higher fares |
| Lodge arrival or departure | Normal transfer from airstrip or gate | Lodge runs normal programme | No change, but factor in extra time if road transfer involves bank closures for cash stops |
What Stays Open and What Closes on a Zambian Public Holiday
Government offices and banks always close. That is the rule. Most formal businesses close too, including many retail shops in Lusaka's malls. Large supermarkets such as Shoprite and Pick n Pay in Lusaka, the Victoria Falls area, and Ndola open reduced hours, 08:00 to 13:00. Fuel stations on major highways (T1 south, T3 to the Copperbelt, and the Great North Road T2) operate normal or slightly reduced hours. Fuel stations inside national parks do not exist except at park gates or major lodges. Fill up before entering. Informal markets and small shops in towns may open depending on the owner. Safari lodges, bush camps, and adventure operators in the Falls area (bungee jumping, helicopter flights, Devil's Pool guided walks) stay open. Domestic flights operate but with reduced frequency on Christmas Day and Easter Monday. Proflight Zambia and Mahogany Air publish their schedules about two weeks before each public holiday. If you are flying on a holiday, call the airline directly rather than trusting an online booking engine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do safari lodges close on public holidays in Zambia?
No. Safari lodges and camps in South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue, and around Victoria Falls operate their normal game drive and activity schedules on all public holidays including Christmas and Independence Day. The only exception is if the lodge closes for the rainy season (January to March in low-lying valleys), which is a seasonal closure, not a holiday closure.
Can I get a visa on arrival in Zambia on a public holiday?
Yes. Immigration desks at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport in the Victoria Falls area, and Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola are staffed every day of the year including public holidays. The visa on arrival fee is payable in USD cash. The Kaza UniVisa that allows travel between Zambia and Zimbabwe is also available on holidays at these airports and at land borders.
Are fuel stations open on public holidays in rural Zambia?
Fuel stations in rural areas and along secondary roads may close on public holidays. Stations on the major highways (T1, T2, T3) open reduced hours, 08:00 to 14:00. Fuel availability in rural areas is already intermittent outside holidays, with shortages occurring without warning in November and December before rains improve tanker access. Fill your tank the evening before a public holiday if you are self-driving.
How do Zambia's school breaks affect public holiday travel?
School breaks run roughly mid-January to mid-April (term 1), mid-May to mid-August (term 2), and early September to early December (term 3). Exact dates are set annually by the Ministry of Education. When a public holiday falls inside a school break, particularly the April Easter period and the August Farmers' Day weekend, bus occupancy rises sharply and lodge rates peak. Book accommodation and bus tickets several weeks ahead for those windows.
Is Independence Day a good time to visit Victoria Falls?
Independence Day on 24 October is in the hot dry season. Temperatures peak and humidity is lowest. Water levels at Victoria Falls are at their annual minimum on the Zambian side, which means the rock face is most visible and Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool access is usually possible. The Zambian side of the falls can be visited normally. The date itself does not close the falls or the adventure operators. The main inconvenience is that banks are closed, so bring enough Kwacha and USD cash for your entire stay.
What happens if I need cash on a public holiday in a small town like Mfuwe or Mongu?
ATMs in small towns frequently run out of Kwacha even on normal days. On a public holiday the chance is near certain. Card machines at lodges and shops also fail due to connectivity issues. Withdraw enough cash in Lusaka or the Victoria Falls area before travelling. For a week in South Luangwa, budget roughly ZMW 3,000 to ZMW 5,000 per person for tips, drinks, and small purchases, but confirm current costs with your lodge before departure. USD cash is accepted at most lodges, but change is given in Kwacha.
Are regional traditional ceremonies public holidays across all of Zambia?
No. Ceremonies such as the Kulamba Ceremony, Kuomboka Ceremony, Umtheto Cultural Festival, Nc'wala Ceremony, and Lwiindi Gonde Ceremony cause localised closures only in the district where they are held. Government offices and banks in that district may close. There is no nationwide shutdown. Travellers driving through Eastern Province during the Nc'wala Ceremony in late February should expect roadblocks and crowds around Mtenguleni village.
