The map shows Los Angeles and San Francisco sitting a comfortable handspan apart. The road distance is 615 kilometres. The drive takes six to seven hours without traffic. That is the single most important number here. The United States is a car country, and the biggest mistake first-time visitors make is assuming they can train or bus between mid-sized cities quickly. You cannot. The private automobile is the dominant mode. Plan around that or plan to be stranded.

The country delivers extraordinary geographic variety. You can change climate and cuisine without changing currency or language. But the infrastructure outside a handful of urban cores assumes you own a vehicle. Ninety-two percent of households do. You need a credit card to rent a car, a valid home country licence, and an International Driving Permit if your licence is not in English. Without a car you are confined to a narrow set of corridors. The Northeast Corridor is the Exception, Not the Rule

Amtrak serves the contiguous 48 states on a sparse network. It has exactly one high-speed corridor: the Northeast Corridor from Boston to Washington DC. The drive is 365 kilometres and takes four to five hours. Here, rail beats driving. Outside this corridor, do not rely on it.

But a bus from Dallas to Houston takes four hours, same as driving, and you arrive at a station that may be miles from where you need to be. You still need a car at the other end.

Domestic air travel is the primary intercity passenger transport mode. Eighteen mainline carriers serve roughly 500 airports. The busiest airport in 2024 was Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International. A flight from New York to Los Angeles takes about six hours in the air. But you need to arrive at the airport two hours before departure, the flight may be delayed by summer thunderstorms in the Southeast or winter snow in the Northeast, and you still need a rental car at the destination. The total door-to-door time often matches or exceeds driving for trips under 800 kilometres.

Booking, Bags, and ID Rules

Book flights on airline websites or aggregators like Google Flights and Expedia. Tickets are dated for a specific flight and time. Change policies vary by fare class. Southwest Airlines allows two free checked bags; most other carriers charge a fee for checked luggage. Bring a government-issued photo ID. Foreign nationals need a passport. US residents need a REAL ID-compliant licence from May 7 2025. If your flight is cancelled at 1am, you sleep in the terminal or pay for a hotel. There is no right to rebooking on another airline.

You need a credit card. Debit cards are accepted at some agencies but trigger a large hold on funds and a credit check. The minimum rental age at major agencies is 21. Drivers under 25 pay a surcharge. The valid home country licence is required. If your licence is not in English, get an International Driving Permit before you leave. Understanding the Road Network

The Interstate Highway System stretches 78,000 kilometres. The total road network spans 6.8 million kilometres. You can drive from coast to coast on Interstate 80, a trip that takes five to six days. The distances between national parks are vast. Grand Canyon South Rim to Zion Canyon is a long morning's drive. Zion to Yellowstone is 1,300 kilometres. You cannot wing it. Book lodging in national parks 12 months ahead. Grand Canyon South Rim, Yellowstone, and Yosemite Valley fill that far out. Entry reservations are required at Yosemite in peak season. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles from March through November; you take a shuttle.

The Five Places It Actually Works

Car-free travel is practical in exactly five places: the Northeast Corridor from Boston to Washington DC, and the urban cores of Chicago, San Francisco, and Portland Oregon. The New York City subway carried roughly 2.0 billion trips in 2024. It runs 24 hours. Chicago has a solid rail system. San Francisco has BART and Muni. Everywhere else, public transit exists but is limited in coverage and frequency. The Sun Belt suburbs of Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, and Atlanta are built for cars. A bus may run once an hour and stop a kilometre from your hotel.

Rideshares and Airport Connections

Uber and Lyft operate in most urban areas. They are expensive for long trips and surge-priced when flights land. A taxi from Los Angeles airport to downtown costs roughly 50 dollars and takes 45 minutes. The FlyAway bus costs 9.75 dollars and takes the same time. There is no direct rail link from LAX. At most airports outside the top ten, public transit connections range from limited to nonexistent. You take a rideshare or you rent a car.

A short hop on a map can be five to eight hours of highway driving with nothing in between. Dallas to Houston is 385 kilometres and 3.5 to 4 hours. Miami to Orlando is 375 kilometres and 3.5 to 4 hours. Los Angeles to San Francisco is 615 kilometres and six to seven hours. These are not day trips. They are travel days that eat your itinerary.

Connectivity and Payments

Download offline maps before driving through the Mountain West or Great Plains. Cell coverage is patchy. Free Wi-Fi is widespread in chain hotels and coffee shops but absent in national parks and rural areas. A prepaid eSIM from Airalo or Holafly works well. A physical US SIM from T-Mobile or AT&T bought at an airport or big-box store gives better rural coverage. Carry cash for toll roads. Some states have cashless tolling that bills your licence plate and sends a fine if you do not pay online within days.

The One Thing That Goes Wrong Most Often

Visitors assume they can train or bus between mid-sized cities quickly. They look at a map, see a short distance, and book a Greyhound or Amtrak. The bus is late. The train is four hours late. The station is in a part of town that feels unsafe at night. They miss their connection. They arrive at 2am with no rental car and no rideshare available. That is the failure case. Avoid it by accepting one hard rule: if you are not on the Northeast Corridor, you need a car. Rent it at the airport. Book it before you arrive. The car is not a luxury. It is the transport system.
