In San Pedro de Atacama, most tour agencies for Valle de la Luna and El Tatio Geysers want cash. In Puerto Natales, guesthouses and small restaurants post a 5-10% surcharge for card payments, or refuse them outright. On the Carretera Austral, fuel stations and ferry offices may not have a working terminal. USD is not a reliable fallback either; only high-end Torres del Paine lodges and a handful of San Pedro operators take dollars, and at a poor rate.

Why International Cards Get Rejected on Bus Websites

This is the single most common frustration for visitors booking Chile buses. You find a Turbus or Pullman Bus route online, enter your card details, and the payment fails. No error message explains why.

The reason is that many Chilean bus company payment gateways require a Chilean-issued card or a Chilean RUT tax ID for online verification. Cards issued in the US, UK, EU, or Australia are not recognized by the system. The solution is not to keep retrying with a different card. Go to the terminal. Buy the ticket in person with cash or a Chilean debit card. For the Turbus to Valparaíso or a long-haul semi-cama bus to the Lake District, terminal purchase is the reliable route. ATMs exist in Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas, but they run empty. By Saturday afternoon in Puerto Natales, the BancoEstado machines at the main plaza are out of notes. You then wait until Monday morning for a refill. The same happens in San Pedro de Atacama, where the single cluster of ATMs serves the entire tourist corridor.

Torres del Paine park entry is paid at the park office or online through the government portal; international cards work there. But the refugios inside the park and guesthouses in Puerto Natales require cash for food, extra gear, or last-minute bed space. By Saturday afternoon, cash is gone.

Rural Buses Beyond the Semi-Cama Network

Local buses connecting small towns on the Carretera Austral or Chiloé Island take only cash. The driver is the ticket seller. No terminal, no card reader, no receipt.

Tipping and Tax Rules You Actually Need

Vendors check high-denomination peso notes for watermarks and security threads. Counterfeit risk is higher with those denominations. Inspect notes before accepting them. The exchange rate floats daily. The best method is an ATM withdrawal with DCC declined and no international transaction fee. The US dollar parallel market is not a significant factor; official channels dominate. Banking hours in cities are Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 14:00, not a minute later.
