Every Non Citizen Needs a Visa Before Boarding

No nationality receives visa free entry to Australia. Every passenger except New Zealand citizens must hold a valid visa or electronic travel authority before they board their flight. There is no visa on arrival. The Australian Department of Home Affairs sets the rules and the airline is required to check your authorisation at check in. Booking a flight before you have the visa in hand is the single most common mistake travellers make. The visa can take days to process. The flight will not wait.

Check your passport against the Australia visa requirements for your nationality. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. Some nationalities are accepted with a passport valid until the date of departure. Check the exact rule for your issuing country on the Home Affairs site rather than assuming. You also need evidence of onward or return travel. Immigration and the airline may both ask for it.

The ETA and EVisitor Distinction

Most visitors from qualifying countries get either an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) subclass 601 or an eVisitor subclass 651. These are not the same visa. They serve the same purpose but they are processed on different platforms and have different eligibility lists. The ETA covers travellers from Brunei, Canada, Hong Kong (SAR), Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States. The eVisitor covers all European Union member states plus Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Vatican City. Both are valid for multiple entries over 12 months with stays of up to three months per visit.

The big operational difference is the platform. ETA eligible passport holders must use the AustralianETA app to apply. That is the official government mobile application. There is no website version for the ETA. The eVisitor is applied for through the Department of Home Affairs ImmiAccount portal online. Neither is a paper form.

Australia ETA Application: the App Requirement

If your passport comes from an ETA eligible country you must download the AustralianETA app onto a smartphone. The app is available from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. You will scan your passport bio page using your phone camera and take a live photograph of your face. The application asks a series of security and health questions. The processing time is usually minutes but the official advice allows up to 24 hours. Do not book a flight departing before the notification email arrives.

Avoid Third Party Fees

Avoid third party websites that charge inflated fees. The official app cost was AUD 20 in 2024. The Department of Home Affairs sets the fee and it changes on an annual schedule. A third party site can charge multiples of that and provide no faster processing. You do not need a travel agent to do this.

EVisitor Visa Australia: the Online Portal

For travellers from eVisitor eligible countries the application goes through the ImmiAccount portal on the Home Affairs website. The process takes longer than the ETA. Allow at least two weeks before your departure date, though many clear in a few days. The eVisitor is free. There is no application fee. Third party sites that charge for an eVisitor are charging you for something the government provides at no cost.

The eVisitor does not require the app. You complete the form on a desktop or tablet, attach a digital copy of your passport photo page, and submit. You receive a confirmation email with a reference number. That reference number is your proof of application, not the visa itself. Wait for the formal grant notification before you book anything non refundable.

What the Other Visas Cover

Nationals who are not on either the ETA or eVisitor list must apply for a Visitor visa subclass 600. This is a full visa application requiring more documentation including proof of funds, a travel itinerary, and sometimes an invitation letter. Processing times run from weeks to months depending on the application volume from your country. Start this process at least three months before your intended travel date.

Australia Working Holiday Visa: Who Qualifies

The working holiday visa (subclass 417) and the work and holiday visa (subclass 462) are not entry visas for a standard tourist trip. They are for travellers aged 18 to 30 or up to 35 for some nationalities who want to work in Australia to fund extended travel. The eligibility list changes by country. Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea and several other countries have reciprocal arrangements. Apply through ImmiAccount. It takes longer and costs more than the ETA or eVisitor. If your goal is a two week holiday you need the ETA, eVisitor or subclass 600, not the working holiday visa.

Biosecurity Screening

Once the visa is granted you are not done. Australia operates a strict biosecurity screening at every international airport. All luggage is X rayed or inspected by detector dogs. You must complete an Incoming Passenger Card on arrival either on paper or through the digital declaration system. Declare fresh food, plant material, animal products, soil contaminated equipment, and any cash amount AUD 10,000 or more. Failure to declare risks a fine or visa cancellation.

Border Processing

At the border you use SmartGate facial recognition if you have an ePassport. Others provide fingerprint and facial image. The process is quick but the queuing time varies. Sydney Kingsford Smith and Melbourne Tullamarine handle the highest international volumes. Arrive at least 90 minutes before your connecting domestic flight if you have one.

The One Step Everyone Misses

Book the visa before the flight. It sounds obvious. Every week a traveller arrives at the airport holding a flight ticket but no visa grant notification. The airline refuses boarding. The passenger loses the fare. The ETA or eVisitor is a digital record linked to your passport number. The airline sees it when they scan your passport. No notification in your inbox means no entry to the aircraft. Apply early, wait for the written grant, and then book.
