The reality is a road distance of 540 km from Göreme to Antalya, a seven to eight hour drive over mountain passes with no railway in sight. The intercity bus network is the actual connective tissue of this country, not the rail map. If you want to get from Istanbul to the Aegean coast or from Cappadocia to the Mediterranean, you will do it on a private coach, not a train. Plan your itinerary around bus timetables, not rail lines, or you will strand yourself.
The Turkey Intercity Bus Network: What You Need to Book and How
Long distance coaches operated by Kamil Koç, Metro Turizm, Pamukkale Turizm, and Ulusoy are the backbone of travel between regions. Overnight services run between major cities. A bus from Istanbul to Antalya takes about 10 hours; Istanbul to Cappadocia (Nevşehir) takes around 8 hours. Each ticket is dated for a specific departure time and seat number, and you need a government issued photo ID matching the name on the ticket to board.
How to Buy Tickets

Turkey YHT High Speed Train: the Three City Corridor Only
TCDD operates the YHT high speed network on four routes: Ankara to Istanbul via Eskişehir, Ankara to Konya, Ankara to Sivas, and Istanbul to Konya. Journey time from Istanbul to Ankara is 4.5 to 5 hours for roughly 530 km of track. The trains are modern, comfortable, and reliably on time, with security screening at station entrances and the same ID requirement as buses.
Where the YHT Does Not Go
The high speed network does not reach the coast. No rail line at all connects Antalya, Bodrum, or Fethiye to the rest of the network. The corridor under construction from Ankara to İzmir will help when it opens, and the Mersin to Adana to Gaziantep line is also in progress, but neither exists yet. If your trip is Istanbul, Ankara, and Konya, the YHT is your best option. If you are heading to the Turquoise Coast, you are back on a coach.
Buying Tickets
Book through the TCDD Taşımacılık app or website. Tickets are dated for a specific train and seat. For conventional intercity trains on routes without YHT service, unreserved tickets are sometimes sold on the day of travel, but these are slow, infrequent, and not worth planning around.
Turkey Domestic Flights Comparison: When the Bus is Not Sane
Turkish Airlines is the backbone domestic air carrier, with Pegasus Airlines and Ajet (formerly AnadoluJet) as secondary options. Baggage allowance on Turkish Airlines domestic EcoFly fare is 15 kg checked; Pegasus charges separately for checked bags. For certain city pairs, flying is not luxury but necessity.
When to Fly
Istanbul to Antalya: 1 hour 20 minutes in the air versus 10 hours on a bus. Istanbul to Bodrum: 1 hour versus 11 hours by road. Istanbul to Kars for the Ani ruins: 2 hours versus 18 hours on a coach. The domestic flight boarding requirement is a government issued photo ID matching the boarding pass, and security screening at the airport entrance. Book through airline websites or apps; prices rise steeply within a week of departure.
Which Airport Matters
Istanbul Airport (IST) is 45 km from the centre. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side serves Pegasus and Ajet. Antalya Airport (AYT) has a tram connection to the city centre for a few lira. Factor transfer time and cost into your decision: a flight may take one hour but the airport transfer can add two hours each end.
Turkey Otogar Servis Minibus: Your Free Ride Out of the Terminal
Every long distance bus company runs a free servis minibus from the otogar to a central drop off point. When you buy your ticket, ask for the servis location at your destination. At the otogar, follow the signs or ask staff which bay serves your company's servis. The minibus leaves when full, not on a schedule. If you arrive after 23:00, the servis may have stopped running.
