If you just look at the photos you'll see that it is an incredibly beautiful place.I was worried about it being too commercial, overrun by tourists, kitschy and so on. And yes, it was crowded especially on May 1st since that's a holiday, but even then when we got back to our little guesthouse ,it was quiet and relaxed and so beautiful.
We spent 4 days in Yunnan and Lijiang and the surrounding area, especially the day trip we took to Jade Dragon Snow mountain and Baisha was just wonderful.
The people were so charming and the pace there (no cars!) was magic.

We arrived in Lijiang by plane from Xi'an via Kunming. It was a very easy flight and to our relief there was a man from the guest house waiting to collect us from the airport and take us by minivan to Lijiang . There we were met by two very strong teenage girls from the Naxi minority who wanted to carry our bags for us. My husband (being an ex soldier) was highly embarrassed but it was quite a walk through the winding alleys to reach our inn. This continued to be a problem, because every time we went out, we got lost on the way back , and several times, locals called up the guest house and they would come and fetch us home from wherever we were! Anyway it was an adventure.
The people at the guest house, especially Miss Dong were lovely and very helpful .
