Fulfilling my Fantasy | Sensational Sydney Opera House |
When I was in grade school, our geography book was titled "Other Lands and Other Places" (if I remember correctly) and inside was an introduction to the whole world. With the turning of each page, I became more intrigued. This book lead me into a fantasy world that has become reality in my adult life as now I am able to travel to these other lands and places. The other reality is that I need more vacation days and more vacation money. I 'm a budget traveler so no fancy hotel addresses and only an ocassional gourmet restaurant will grace my pages, but I have met so many wonderful people while traveling on trains and staying in bed and breakfasts, homes, and inns. Each country, state, or province is a new adventure and meeting and talking to the people who live there is a very special part of the trip. |
Traveling Dreams My earliest travels were through the the US with short visits to Mexico and Canada, then came the month long trip to Europe - that dream finally came true. Now in my later adult life I've added more trips to Europe and to Israel. In 2008 another dream has come true; I visited Australia and New Zealand.
I'm looking forward to South American and cruise of Greece, Turkey and Eqypt in 2009 and possible a trip to China.
I'll only stop traveling if I run out of money or I'm too old to get to the plane! |  | |
Rosehill's Visit from New Zealand Rosie and I have been writing via Virtual Tours and other email for several years. In 2007 I was fortunate to visit her in Christchurch, but only for a day while she showed me all the sites in her lovely town.
I was delighted to have Rosie come visit me for four days in October '08. I was housebound with a broken ankle (on cruise ship - that's another story) Much of the four days was spent talking and her wheeling me around in a wheelchair to local coffee houses and local strip-mall shopping. Not very exciting time for her, but it was such a delight to have her spend some special time with me. Thank you Rosie. |

| | Another VT Party? In August of 2003, the Virtual Tourists gang put on the first "bash" open to all those VTR's around the world. It was a weekend of fun with food, drink and included a festive volleyball tournament (Surf Festival 6-Person Volleyball Tournament) in Manhattan Beach, CA. They outdid themselves again with a repeat of this extravaganza in August of 2004.
There have been a few since which I'm sorry to say I didn't attend.

English Language This is for those people in other countries around the world who have mastered the very difficult English language.
Read each line and notice the same word with a different meaning..
If you ever feel stupid, then just read on. If you've learned to speak
fluent English, you must be a Genius!

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine
in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French
fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't
sweet, are meat.
Quicksand works slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig isneither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write
but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?
If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth?
One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? If you have a bunch of odds
and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? Is it
an odd, or an end?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats
vegetables, what does a Humanitarian eat? In what language do people
recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by
ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and
a wise guy are opposites?
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your
house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by
filling it out, and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the
creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all.
That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the
lights are out, they are invisible. |
